Lap it up..... :)

Juuust take a gander at these lovelies:) I scored them at...yep, you guessed it! A freaking garage sale this last Saturday!

How adorable are they? This lady had a whole box of linens and things that she was practically giving away. I die:)

I thought, (and so did she) that there were only 11. She sold them to me for.........5 bucks!! When I got home and started to take the stack apart, there were 12!!!! 12 lovely Belgian linens from Anthro.
S-C-O-R-E !!

These beauts are a whopping 26" square:) I believe my friend Martha Stewart calls them "lapkins". And I LOVE them:)

But love isn't love till you.....
GIVE IT AWAY!!

Yes, these lovelies can be yours:)

Tell me the best thing you've scored for under $5. That's it!!
I'll announce the winner next Tuesday:)

  6. You have such good luck Dorie! My best deal for under $5.00, which i think is hard in AZ, would have to be my 2 cases of canning jars...

  7. Wow! What a find!! My best deal for 5$ was a set of 12 old tobacco glasses & every one of them had their original tin lid! Great as organizers & I've used them at an outdoor dinner party with little tealights in them! BTW, I just happened upon your blog recently & am enjoying every little detail. My husband & I have been to Dana Point twice and absolutely love it there! We are from TX. Your place looks absolutely lovely. These pretty linens are my kind of colors, and thank you for a chance at a great giveaway!

  9. Two things--both from Goodwill. I found a large cream colored ceramic gourd lamp. I had been looking at similar ones online that were pricey and couldn't believe I found almost a twin to the ones I had been looking at for $2.99! Also, I found a beautiful heavy crystal bowl for $3.45. It was marked on the bottom to I researched online and found the exact bowl for sale for $60. Great score on the beautiful napkins, Dorie!

  10. a couple of weeks back I scored two Wilton Armetale bowls at a garage sale for $4 each. I was soo excited I amost skipped the whole way home. I love your blog and your beautiful home!!!

  11. Oh my...those made my heart go "pitter-patter"! Amazing score!! I'd have to say my favorite $5 find would have to be a box of Buffalo China for a whopping $4. I just recently "found" your blog, but I have to say I love it. Thanks for the inspiration!

My best $5? Tee hee Tee hee! I bought this pair of shoes.......just a pair of black thongs..........I looked them up at Zappos and they sell, new, for $170. My pair looked like they had never been walked in - on the street!
S-C-O-R-E! I love bargains. And no, I have no qualms over buying shoes! Once they are cleaned and sanitized, they are probably cleaner than some I own!
I am also brand new to your blog (thanks to Layla)

  13. Those are gorgeous! I have lots of things I buy for under $5 that I THINK will be treasures but then fail to complete whatever transformation is necessary for the treasure part to emerge. My best already-awesome find was a white pillow with black swirls on it for $3 at a yard sale. It makes even the worst bedding look classy...and I've found them online for much, much more money!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I got big tin bins for $3 on clearance at Target last year (the kind you can use for drinks at a bbq, magazines, shoes, or anything else).

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh, how I love linen napkins! Best under $5 find - my mismatch dining chairs. I found 8 different style & different color chairs from various thrift stores. We painted them all black & I recovered all their cushions to match.

    ReplyDelete
  16. What darling "lapkins"! They will go perfectly with your green kitchen! How kind of you to think of all of your readers too! My best score under $5 was a black iron plate rack at a thrift store. It fit perfectly in my daughter's new kitchen. We put three vintage Fiestaware plates on it. It made me happy to see her smile!

  17. The best think I scored was for my lego enthusiast son. It was the X-wing fighter that retailed for $150. I was at Walmart after Christmas and saw all these loose, clear bags of legos. I asked the lady how much and she said $2.50 for all of them and gave me permission to get the rest of the loose bags on the shelf. I found a few more along with the instructions. When we the X-wing together, we were only missing 6 pieces which were easy to substitute with his collection.

I love your find and your blog. Green is also my favorite color. Michele

  18. My friend and I were at a yard sale and she fell in love with a huge shabby chic bowl. I decided to buy it for her for her birthday(thinking it was at least 20 bucks). When the man said $5 I almost fainted. She uses the bowl all the time for salad and on top of the fridge for decoration. Best $5 I ever spent!

  19. I am not very good at haggling, so I tend to stray away from yard sales. I am a Goodwill girl though, and bought a $6 White House Black Market dress, new with tags! Score!

  20. My family is constantly teasing me about my "thrift" finds. I love the challenge! My latest find was a "Johnson Motors" t-shirt that sells for $50....got it for under 5 bucks! So happy :)

  24. What a fantastic find and giveaway -- lapkins is a perfect term, lol! One of my most recent scores was a BRAND NEW (with tags still) jacket from Coldwater Creek (one of my favorite catalogs) jacket -- they sell in the $100.00 range (easily) for a mere $3.00 -- oh, I am going to be loving that on vacation over the 4th when we go north to Minnesota and I'll need a little jacket for evening activities :)

    Blessings!

  27. You are giving these away!!!! I am sitting here in shock. First that someone spent $72 for napkins on sale, secondly that you paid five dollars for them and lastly, that you are being so incredibly generous by gifting them to one of your happy followers. Thank you!

My best "score" was a Steiff Rooster for a dollar, with his original button intact! He is such a cutie!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am a clearance, garage sale and thrift store queen so there is not a lot in my house that cost more than five dollars! But my latest best find was a bra at Ross - I wear an unconventional size and usually have to be fitted and pay top dollar for them! Imagine my great joy when I stumbled upon the exac bra I had just paid $65 for with a price tag of $3.99! Score!

  30. About 8 year ago I scored a floor length Black Ralph Lauren Dress for a $5 at a Department Store Outlet Rummage Sale. It had a broken zipper, but I thought I can totally fix that...so I splurged... Everyone needs "The Black Dress". I didn't know where I was going to wear it but it has hung faithfully in my closet for the last 8 years in a garment bag. The perfect occasion arrived last Dec. I wore it to one of my hubby's clients Christmas parties. I dressed it up with some rocking pearls. I had to laugh because my hose stockings cost more than my designer dress. It had original tags on it and retailed for $325.

  31. My best find was a 10 cent old Tinkerbell bank which I later sold on eBay for more than $40.00!

Love your blog - I found it via "The Lettered Cottage". Now can't wait until it's Tuesday!

  33. Best thing I scored for under $5-five blue glass quart mason jars. They are on ebay and in antique stores for 5-10 ea so when I saw them at a garage sale I was stoked! Almost felt bad but not enough to argue with $1 a piece!

  39. The best thing I ever found under $5.00 was a lap size double wedding ring quilt made about 40 years ago. I was at a local swap meet and there it was peeking out of a cardboard box. I picked it up, asked the price and the man said, "How about 25 cents?" SOLD!!!!!!

  40. Those "lapkins" are delightful--they remind me of summers at my Nana's cottage. Thanks for the chance to win!

My best score under $5? Our old Yellow Lab, Max. He was the runt of the litter, and he had this funny little grunt--kind of sounded like a piglet. He was perfectly healthy (ck'd by the vet), just liked to make that little noise. The lady who had the litter was afraid he wouldn't find a good home and when I went to look at him and fell in love--she said "he's yours for $5--I think that covers the food he's eaten!" LOL! BEST $5 I EVER spent!

  41. I scored a beautiful lemonade pitcher for $3 a few weeks ago that I love! Love those napkins too!

  42. The best thing I have ever gotten for $5...a husband. I met my future husband during my freshman year of college and all it took to entice him was a $5 pizza. We talked all night. The next morning I called my mom to tell her I had met the man I was going to marry. He did the same. We will be together 11 years in November and married for 7 years with 2 kids and one on the way this July. Best $5 I've ever spent!

    Love the LAPkins!

  43. 2 old wooden windows - with lots of character (panes, etc.)found while "dumpster diving" - well, actually, just making the rounds on trash collection day! :D I use them as a wall hanging - one has family photos behind each pane, the other has cool quotes, such as: "If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much space"! Free!

Oh, ... and one more ... also collected from someone's curb: free - the horse from an old child's rocking horse with a sign around its neck that said, "Free to good cowboy"! LOVE it! My husband made a base for it and our 1.5 year-old grandson hasn't gotten off of it since we gave it to him for Christmas!

  44. I once bought a fireplace mantel for $5., and set it in the garage where it stayed for years and years. The hubby kept threatening to throw it out. Then, when we moved to our present house, the fireplace was in serious need of an overhaul. That mantel is now installed and it looks fabulous!

  47. My best "score" for $5.00 was a set of vintage pool balls that came in the original box. They are proudly displayed in a bowl on our coffee table.

    ReplyDelete
  48. My very best "score" was a beautiful majolica begonia plate. I spied it before I even got out of the car. It was 50 cents. After I paid, the seller and her friend started laughing and saying "I can't believe anyone would buy that ugly old thing." I was thrilled and later traded it for a big chippy white cabinet....which I still have. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

  49. Holy moly there are some good scores at the garage sales out there!!! What a find, and NWT even. Wow.

Best find? I got two vintage Pyrex casseroles at the DI for $6 once. That was pretty dang exciting. Best Goodwill finds overall were the set of four pink gooseberry Pyrex bowls for $20 and the giant beveled edge mirror for $20. I don't go garage saling because I don't get up early enough. :(

  50. I don't seem to score as many great finds as you do... but that probably has a lot to do with my sleeping in on Saturdays. My best find has been a free dresser from a neighbor. Thanks for the giveaway!

  51. Back in 1976....we had NO furniture. Went to a church rummage sale and found a thickly lacquered sideboard. Not sure of what was beneath all of that lacquer, but took a chance and bought it for $2.50! To our delight, with a little elbow grease, a beautiful walnut piece with birdseye maple insets with hanging brass pull-knobs on the doors emerged! That was the beginning....love a great find~ REALLY. LOVE. your anthro score!!! :)

  53. I absolutely LOVE those Anthro napkins! The best thing I have scored for under $5 was at Target's dollar section at Christmas. I found small leaf green felted baskets with red grosgrain ribbon woven around the top for a dollar each. I filled them with goodies and gave them to our school secretaries for Christmas. Love your blog!

  54. A few months ago at the thrift I scored the sweetest little sewing chair..the seat lifts up and has this little curved back...it was just sitting the all alone on the sidewalk $1.50....so sad and lonely.
I swooped it up so fast, I nearly tripped over myself putting into my truck....
I went directly to my favorite fabric store (fabric depot) ..armed with fabric , trim and paint..it is a total transformation!
The sassiest little thing you ever saw...we call her Bella!
I look forward to Tuesday with Dorie ever week....
    Good score on the lapkins!

  55. When my husband was in the Army we did 2 tours in Germany...about twice a year they would put out on the curb anything they did not want. We found furniture, dishes, wooden clogs, and one of the best finds a large galvanized wash tub that I now have in the garden spilling over with annuals.

  56. My German grandmother brought back a stovetop espresso maker from Sicily when she served as a Navy wife in the 60s. I the 80s I fell in love with the coffee while waitressing in an Italian restaurant. My children were young and we had a very tight budget. I coveted a pot of my own, but they were $19.99 at Cost Plus. Quite a few times I had it in my cart only to return it to the shelf after more careful consideration. On a Saturday morning neighborhood walk, three toe-heads in tow, I stumbled across a yard sale. Perched on a wooden bench just over the fence was my prize, 25 cents and it was mine. I still have it.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Would scoring something for $0.00 count? Many, many years ago, furnishing an apartment as a single girl on a budget, I lucked into a yard sale in a beautiful neighborhood. There would have to be something wonderful there, right? As it turns out, I scored a husband! He was helping friends move, and volunteered, also, to help them move the heavier items for their yard sale. We struck up a conversation, and it has been going on for over 30 years. (I will post this as Anonymous, because, as you might infer by the "many years", I'm not quite sure how to "choose" a profile under which to submit this. Hey, at least I know how to subscribe to a blog. Yours is so much fun to read, Dorie.)

  58. I was going to say my hubby, but someone beat me to it. I was working at a dry cleaners with a husband and wife as owners. One bet me 5 bucks to go out with a baseball player, the husband bet me five bucks to go out with my husband to be who was his flight instructor. I dated the baseball player got the five bucks, then went out with my husband and ended up giving back the five bucks on our wedding day. That was 27 years ago.

My second best find was I went to a flea market and bought a box of jewelry for 3 bucks. It turned out all of it was real. Antique pin with diamonds. Hat pins with pearls, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  59. My best $5 deal was a huge cast iron garden urn. If you could move it, you could have it for $5. Luckily my husband was with me and we managed to huff and puff and roll/walk it to the truck. Two hernias later, it was mine!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I scored a set of 3 Fireking Delphite mixing bowls for $3.00!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I would have to say a can of spray paint - I have transformed almost every brass thing in my house with spray paint which has saved me from having to buy new things ;) Love your blog and I am totally in love with Wallace!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I got a king sized bed from IKEA for 5 bucks! It was in the as-is section on one of those throw out piles of wood, furniture and such that is all disassembled! (they wrap it all up in plastic, so you don't know what all is on the cart) When I got all of the stuff home and began piecing everything together, I got the bed, and a most of a dresser (minus the backing, but the dresser became pieces of fantastic projects all over my house - shelves, wall art, chore charts, etc...) I sleep on that bed with my hubby! That was a score.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Best thing I ever spent $5 on was an 8 drawer organizer. Usually I sleep in WAY too late to get the good stuff but that was a good deal.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I was wandering around an Estate Sale in Tucson when I spotted what I thought was a set of Waterford salt and pepper shakers. When I approached the vendor to pay for them he said he had checked them out and thought they were copies because he didn't find the mark. When I got them home, with the help of the magnifying glass, there it was!!! SCORE!

    ReplyDelete
  65. A 165 piece set of white dishes that was in a falling apart-taped together box in the basement of Ross for...$4.95.

    ReplyDelete
  66. How gooooorgeous! And what a steal! I got a vintage orange pyrex baking dish for $4 at Goodwill. It's the loveliest piece that started a pyrex addiction lol

  67. I am a part-time junker and full-time stay home Mommy. I love your blog, your sense of style and those LAPKINS! We live in an area that has 4 distinct seasons & so far summer is off to a slow start, but those would be great on the patio with some homemade ice cream. Today my favorite $5 score is my raspberry bushes from a farmer's market. In the past few years they have taken off and produce a ton of seasonal fruit. I love summer, my yard & TIME spent with family & friends making memories over any "found" treasure. :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. I picked up 2 Monterey Brothers benches - $5 each. I gave one to a friend and have the other- in the condition I bought it in- in my front entry! Gorgeous, rustic, vintage, COOL! I once bought a vintage Fiesa compote dish for $10. That doesn't count for the giveaway, but I had to tell you.
