Weekend roundup...:)

Whilst enjoying the amazing weather that Dana Point California has to offer, I thought I'd show you  what a little bit of cooler weather does for this gal:)
I redo shelves-
Before

After:)

I make pizza for lunch:)

And cookies for dessert:)

I pick hydrangeas from my back yard:)

I hit the flea market:)

What I didn't get done??? Cleaning these stinkin curtains!! These are my white linen curtains that hang in my bedroom. You can see (if you can take your eyes off that handsome bully) that they have yellowed in some places:(

So I thought maybe a good soak in oxy clean would do it! Well 3 hours later....nothin:( then I threw them in the washer with hot water, soap and bleach.....nothin.

Then I thought hey! Maybe 3 days (yes I said 3 days!) in the sun would surely do the trick!! Never mind that LB thought it was an absolutely wonderful place to bathe in the sun himself.......

Nothin!!! Does ANYONE know the magic trick to whitening linen curtains? My frustration level is in the red zone:(

  1. Maybe try some RIT color remover or whitener? I used the color remover on a shirt that had some yellow on it from another laundry item that bled and it worked fairly well.

  3. Oh I feel your frustration. Unfortunately, I don't know what advice to give you other than getting on the internet and googling your problem. That's what I do when I don't know what to do. ha! You would be amazed at what you can find out. Your french bulldog is adorable. I love those dogs! I know what you mean about them getting on your freshly washed clothes too. It's as if they have to get their scent on it. Ha!

    1. LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog.............my Mother (Bless her heart) always soaked
everything that yellowed in Biz. It always worked for her and I never remember
hearing her complain that it didn't do it's thing! EVER! She would fill the washer
and let the magic begin ( sometimes over night)...........then wash, and whala.......... she was also an avid vinegar
      user as well.

  9. Pink bar soap purchased in a mexican market. Works awesome!

  10. I use the old thing, Colorox Bleach. I let them soak for a little while, then wash them. Usually does the trick.

  11. Turns out cascade (dishwasher detergent) works. I guess you have to soak it in warm water and a cup of cascade overnight. Then don't use bleach the next time you wash it. I've never done it, I just read a blog where it worked.

Also, I want to go to that flea market! I'm so jealous that you have such an amazing market so close to you!

  13. I just tried something I found on Pinterest. Equal parts blue Dawn dish soap with peroxide, mix and spray on or soak. I had dirty white socks covered in dirt and red clay from spreading mulch. My socks turned out white and almost new looking with the exception of one of my husbands pair. A couple little spots of read clay didn't come out of his. I put it on and could rub it and watch the grey dirt and red clay disappear, I doubt you would have to scrub, I had dirt and clay to rub out. Let it soak 10 minutes or so and the white is back, and the dingy gone. It was awesome!!! Have to rinse out all of the Dawn before putting in the washing machine, especially with the new machines that are high efficiency as it would damage them.

    1. By the way, clorox bleach yellows clothes. Ruined some uniforms in the Navy trying to make them white.

    2. yes! try the dawn and hydrogen peroxide. I used it on a brand new pink halter top that i spilled red wine on... it took out the wine, and didn't whiten the pink. weird!! its like magic!

  14. Bleach yellows certain fabric fibers....try Mrs. Stewarts Blueing...which I find here (in Missouri) at the grocery store. you might try your grocery store or walmart to see if they carry it or you can find locations that sell it here: http://www.mrsstewart.com/

  15. I just found your blog from the feature over at The Lettered Cottage - Your home is STUNNING!!
As for the yellowing curtains, maybe try White Brite - it is designed to remove yellowing & dinginess from white fabrics. Worked wonders on my white sheets!!

  16. Hi I think I know the answer its called White Brite..you fill your washer with the white brite and clothes like in the directions and then let it soak I use this all the time as I have all white towel and they tend to yellow after a while.
The problem with bleach besides it doesnt work is that the bleach and the sunshine will ruin your fabric and one time you will wash them and they will just fall apart..anyway I buy it in Buffal ny as I live in Canada and its the only place I have found it...Wal Mart..may be called somthing different in your neck of the woods but worth a try. Cheers Frances

  19. Hello there,

I just found your blog. Thanks Layla @ The Lettered Cottage. I found a great site, One Good Things by Jillee, that has many, many great homemade recipes for everything you can think of. One being, what will probably help with the linen curtains... homemade detergent, 1c of washing soda and 1c of hydrogen peroxide with hot water. Let it soak for a few hours and you will not believe the results! You have to check her out!

BTW...you have a beautiful home. Hearing about Dana Point makes me miss home- newly transplanted in Texas.

Cant wait to catch up on your site :)

  20. Love your blog and beautiful homes! I am in the process of deciding ona white paint for my kitchen cabinets. I have BM swiss coffee pint home to try. In your AZ house, are your cabinets, ceiling and trim the same color? My existing ceiling and trim color is white dove. Not sure whether to match the cabinets or have it contrast a little. Any words of wisdom? Thanks! Jan. denjan.nymeyer@verizon.net

  22. My mom shared her secret for whitening years ago. It's a 1/4 cup bleach, 1 cup dishwasher detergent (like Cascade) powder. Soak for 30 minutes in hottest water the fabric can stand. Wash as usual. Hope some of the ideas posted work for you.

  23. Use White Bright it works wonders!!!

  24. Peroxide, about 1 cup in the washing machine full of water. Doesn't have to be hot water, just let it sit for an hour or so and then wash. It's better to NOT use hot water because that helps set a stain anyways. But your curtains will brighter than any bleach will ever get them! (Bleach breaks down the fabric fibers over time).

Also, soaking in just Borax works wonders too. I have a lot of vintage baby clothes and linens that have been stored incorrectly in trunks and have the yellow spots on them and I've always soaked them in Borax and I've yet to have any yellow spot not come out! Good luck! (Love your blog)!

  25. Hi! You're dog is too cute! Also, what flea market did you go to? Was it in AZ or CA?

  26. You could soak them in a hot pot of water filled with teabags...they will come out looking antiqued. Then you don't have to keep them white.

  27. This recipe worked for 100 yr. old white baby dresses that were yellowed to the color of brown: mix 20 Mule Team Borax, Oxyclean, and Biz in equal parts. Soak for a while, then wash. I actually simmered the dresses in a big pot on the stove. They came out beautifully!
